Whether you want to live longer or simply have more time to enjoy the things that
matter most, there are certain habits you can adopt thesportship. Despite what you might hear, it
isn’t impossible to extend your life.


A healthy diet, a regular exercise program, and not smoking are the main ways to
boost your longevity. The key is to follow these guidelines closely and make them a
habit over the long term, says Dr. Bernard Perls, a professor of geriatrics at Yale
University and director of the Centenarians’ Health Program.
What You Eat
A well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains helps
keep your energy levels high, lowers your risk of heart disease and diabetes, and
prevents weight gain. Getting enough vitamins and minerals is important, too. You
should aim for at least the recommended amount of vitamin D and calcium.
Staying Active
People who regularly walk, jog, dance or lift weights are much more likely to live
longer than those who don’t. This is because these activities stimulate the body’s
production of nitric oxide, which is good for reducing blood pressure and warding off
heart disease.
But don’t overdo it. Doing too much can put you at risk of heart problems and
muscle damage. And if you’re already in poor health, it’s best to stick with just a
little movement every day rather than a lot.


Be Conscientious
Researchers have found that people who are more conscientious tend to be
healthier. They are more likely to eat right and exercise, and they’re also less likely
to smoke and drink alcohol.
Get a Regular Sleep Schedule
You need plenty of sleep to function properly and prevent serious health conditions
such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. A consistent schedule
can help you get the rest you need, and it can also reduce your stress level.
Make sure you’re going to bed at the same time each night and avoid watching
television or using a tablet before you go to sleep. Lack of sleep is linked to a
number of health problems, including increased cholesterol levels and high blood
pressure, which can shorten your lifespan.
Maintain a Social Life
Strong social ties are one of the biggest factors that influence our lifespan. Several
studies have shown that people who have strong social relationships are

significantly more likely to live past their 90s than those who are isolated and lonely.
It’s important to make time to see friends and family, even if it means taking a break
from work or school. Doing so can improve your mood, reduce stress and increase
mental capacity.
Your friendships are also a great source of support. When your friends are suffering,
you can be there for them and offer encouragement.
Being socially active can also prevent the onset of mental and physical decline, and
may even slow down your degenerative diseases. You can improve your health by
making time to connect with others, and you’ll find it helps your mood, which will in
turn lead to more activity.
